Toward the northern centre of the Wirral are the villages of Upton and Woodchurch; historically Woodchurch used to be a farming area as was Upton before urbanisation took over. Both areas have busy communities with lots to see and discover.
Connected is Arrowe Park, with approximately 425 acres of woodlands and parklands to explore. There are a lot of things to do and amenities in the area, with a hospital and a number of leisure facilities nearby.
Woodchurch Road, Gilbrook, and Woodchurch C of E are both local primary schools, with Woodchurch High a Church of England Academy. Upton Hall School FCJ is a Roman Catholic girl’s school which also has academy status and is close to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School.
Overchurch Junior School is also close by, with a number of primary schools accessible in nearby Greasby. Regular transport links open up a number of good secondary options such as Birkenhead School, Calday Grange Grammar, Pensby High School, Wirral Grammar, and many others.
Scenic Arrowe Country Park is popular with locals, walkers and people looking for a place for the family to enjoy. The open parkland at Arrowe Country Park is also full of deciduous woodland to adventure in, with wildflower meadows attracting different types of butterflies and birds for enthusiasts.
Creatures like frogs and dragonflies can also be found in the ponds dotted around the park which is fun for children, while kingfishers have been known to be spotted along the river and brook. Arrowe Country Park is easily accessible by bus and is walking distance from some local pubs and restaurants.
Upton has a train station which is close by to the local Asda and some small convenience stores. Trains travel between Wrexham and Bidston, with passengers able to depart the latter station to join the Wirral Line with services toward West Kirby, Birkenhead, Chester, Ellesmere Port and Liverpool city centre.
All areas have regular bus services – typically every 10 and 15 minutes – leading across the Wirral and to all major destinations. These areas are also close to the motorway; the M53 which leads to the M6, M56, and M62.
Close to the pitch and putt course in Arrowe Park is the Cherry Orchard, a Toby Carvery restaurant, offering filling family meals and a wide selection of drinks. Down the road is the Arrowe Park, a Hungry Horse, while Goodwin's Bar & Kitchen on Greasby Road is also popular for its location.
There are a number of takeaways available in the area as well as cafes and sandwich shops, with Indian and Chinese restaurants in reach. A short distance away is Greasby which features a number of pubs and bistros in its village for a fun night out.
Upton has a number of options for shoppers with a very large Sainsbury’s next to Upton roundabout, with an Argos and Homebase next to it for homeware. Further down the road in Arrowe Park is a large Asda, while Greasby village is also close by.
Like Greasby village, Upton village has a number of smaller local independent shops to complement well-known retailers like Boots, such as butchers, beauty salons and hairdressers, cafes and grocers, and much more besides. All areas have transport links to Birkenhead and Liverpool city centre.
There’s a lot to do at Arrowe Country Park; two golf courses are available, an 18-hole municipal and a smaller pitch and putt, while children can take advantage of the toddler’s play area and adventure playground. More activities available within the site include bowls, tennis, orienteering, and more.
For health fanatics there’s a large Total Fitness at Prenton bypass in the industrial park. Local swimmers can utilise swimming pool classes at Woodchurch Leisure Centre. There are also gyms in Upton such as Gravity Health Club, located by Upton Cricket Club.
