The suburb of Oxton is an affluent area, a much sought-after village to live in, and features a variation of different properties. Oxton itself is a conservation area with a strong local community. Close by is Prenton which has a lot of semi-detached properties and is popular with families thanks to its good local schools and easy access to Birkenhead and Liverpool. Oxton has a number of listed buildings in the area while Prenton features some interesting Edwardian architecture.

    Residents of Oxton and Prenton have a generous amount of prestigious local schools to choose from. Primary schools include Oxton St. Saviour's C of E (Aided), St. Josephs R C Primary, Woodchurch Road Primary, Prenton Primary, Devonshire Park Primary, and Prenton Preparatory School.

    The acclaimed Birkenhead School teaches children from nursery and early years to junior and right through to secondary school and sixth form. Other secondary schools in the area include Birkenhead High School Academy, St Anselm’s College, Prenton High School for Girls, The Sixth Form College Birkenhead, and many other excellent options.

    Oxton is a fashionable area on the Wirral and has a number of pubs, wine and cocktail bars to choose from. The Courtyard is a popular venue that serves tapas dishes, while Oxton Bar & Kitchen has a selection of craft beers to complement its menu. The Queens Arms and Shrewsbury Arms are more traditional pubs. The Caernarvon Pub is a gastropub in nearby Bidston.

    Fraiche in Oxton boasts the only Michelin star on Merseyside, and has retained it since being granted the award in 2009. Prenton provides interesting flavours with restaurants such as Thai Thai Restaurant, Vindaloo Indian, and Sombrero Mexican, while pubs such as The Swan and Halfway House are good ‘locals’.

    Oxton village is a popular, bustling community with lots of independent shops such as boutique clothing stores, hairdressers, greengrocers, book shops, home décor stores, craft shops, and a post office. Prenton has a variety of shops available including Abakhan Fabrics, Wirral Angling Centre, British Red Cross, bathroom and wetroom shops, and Home Bargains.

    A number of local supermarkets are a short distance away, including a large Tesco in Bidston, a Sainsbury’s, Aldi, and Co-operative on Woodchurch Road, and a large Asda in Birkenhead. Birkenhead precinct and the Pyramids Shopping Centre also host a large number of high street names, with Liverpool accessible by bus and train.

    There’s a lot to do in Oxton. The Williamson Art Gallery and Museum houses an eclectic collection of local and international pieces. Wine bars and cocktail lounges such as The Courtyard and Oxton Bar & Kitchen sometimes have live music at their venues, while events such as Oxton’s Secret Gardens are lively and let residents discover more of the area.

    Prenton is the home of Prenton Park where Tranmere Rovers play their home games. The football club has been a professional club for more than a century and makes up one third of Merseyside’s great football clubs.

  • Parks and walks

    Victoria Park is a popular destination in the area and offers fantastic panoramic views of the River Mersey. The park attracts a lot of wildlife, especially birds. There is also a play area for children to take advantage of. Victoria Park Cricket Club is also local, and features three bowling greens and a full-sized football pitch.

    The Arno in Oxton is held in high regard for its rose garden and small allotments, while families like to take advantage of the play areas and open spaces at the bottom of Duck Pond Lane. Oxton Fields are also enjoyed by local walkers.

  • Leisure and fitness

    Oxton Cricket and Sports Club has great cricket facilities for people to use, as well as being able to provide access to other sports including tennis, bowls and lacrosse. The club is also available for junior members to join.

    There is a large Total Fitness in Prenton, just off Junction 3 on the M53, which has a vast range of facilities including a gymnasium, running track, five-a-side football pitches and three swimming pools. Prenton Golf Club offers a challenging, yet attractive and well-kept, links course. The club also plays host to regular social events.
