New Ferry, Rock Ferry and Tranmere are all urban parts of eastern Wirral; Tranmere especially has a high density of affordable housing, with large investments in property development continuing to see the areas grow and expand. All areas have historical links with port and shipping services with Cammell Laird Shipyard close by, while there are a number of Victorian-style houses to discover. Rock Ferry and New Ferry got their names from the ferry service offered by both in the 1700s, and have since evolved into thriving local communities.

  • Schools

    Tranmere, Rock Ferry and New Ferry have a cluster of primary schools close by for parents to choose from including Rock Ferry Primary, St Anne’s Catholic Primary, Well Lane Primary, Mersey Park Primary, Devonshire Park Primary, Grove Street Primary; all a short distance from each other.

    Secondary schools in the area include Prenton High School for Girls, with a lot of other quality schools and colleges close by. Birkenhead School and St Anselm’s College are all acclaimed and have sixth forms, while The Sixth Form College Birkenhead offers good higher education courses, as does Wirral Metropolitan College.

  • Transport and travel

    Part of the Wirral Line, the closest train stations in the area are Green Lane and Rock Ferry; local stations that can take passengers toward both Chester and Ellesmere Port, or to nearby Birkenhead. A short distance away is Liverpool city centre which also connects with areas across the UK via Lime Street station.

    Bus services are regular and run into Birkenhead bus station, with connecting buses from Birkenhead running across the Wirral and beyond. Good road links are easily available; the A41 connects to Port Sunlight and the Mersey Tunnel, giving easy access to Liverpool. The M53 is also close by.

  • Shopping

    There are a number of small shops in New Ferry including award-winning butchers Edge & Son, which has won national acclaim and has been featured on BBC Radio 4 for its quality. Also within the area is a Co-operative, while angling centres, fabric shops, tilers, and more can be found.

    Liverpool city centre is a short distance away in the car or via public transport and opens up a world of shopping. Grange Precinct and the Pyramids Shopping Centre also have a variety of quality high-street shops, plus there is an independent market close to the centre.

  • Food and drink

    There are lots of good pubs in the area; the Sportsmans Arms and Halfway House are close to Tranmere’s Prenton Park, offering a range of drinks and places to socialise before and after a match. The John Masefield and The Refreshment Rooms are popular ‘locals' in New Ferry, while Rock Station is a community-focused pub which was once a railway hotel.

    Some popular takeaways are local to the area; plus local transport links open up nearby Birkenhead and Oxton with restaurants and wine bars available, while Liverpool city centre is also a short distance away on the bus and train.

  • Parks and walks

    Complemented by unique urban surroundings, New Ferry Butterfly Park is a nature reserve covering nearly five acres of land. The park is a site of biological importance and features rich vegetation and a thriving wildlife ecosystem. Shorefields Nature Park is a large flat green area offering incredible views of the River Mersey and is a great place for birdwatching.

    Victoria Park, a short walk from Rock Ferry train station by Albany Road, is a large 29-acre area with bowling greens, basketball courts, and football courts. It’s popular with walkers and picnicking families. Explorers can also discover the historical shipping heritage of New and Rock Ferry, and Tranmere Sailing Club.

  • Medical centres

    Victoria Park Practice can be found on the border of Tranmere, Rock Ferry, and Bebington, and consists of six doctors and occasional GP Registrars. The clinic offers support for child health, provides immunisations, has a walk-in centre, and an online repeat prescription service. St Catherine’s Health Centre in Birkenhead is also nearby.

    Riverside Surgery Medical Practice is located in Rock Ferry and continues to grow. The practice offers a patient participation group and provides alternative emergency help. It has a number of specialist clinics available including physiotherapy and health screenings; Arrowe Park Hospital is a short distance away from Upton.
