What is it like to work at Karl Tatler Estate Agents?

My name is Andrew Schofield, Operations Director at Karl Tatler Estate Agents. I have a varied role within the business that can be best summed up by saying that I’m responsible for the day-to-day management of the company. I’m here to ensure that our staff follow ‘The Karl Tatler Way’, deliver the service level our clients expect and to ensure we have fun along the way! A large part of my role is focused on people; looking after existing staff, helping them to develop and recruiting new employees, assisting them as they embark on their careers with us.

I often get asked, ‘what is it like to work at Karl Tatler Estate Agents?’, whether that is by friends in the industry or candidates sat in an interview. Naturally they are curious to get beneath the surface of the most successful Estate Agents on the Wirral who has also been awarded multiple National Awards, including Sunday Times Estate Agent of the Year on three occasions. Candidates want to really understand the culture of our business, and what we do differently that makes us number one.

The fact they are asking this sort of question in the first place means there is a good chance they are going to be the right fit for our organisation. That’s because we don’t recruit solely based on experience or skill, instead we look for people who dovetail with our Core Values, ‘Curiosity’ being one of them. Other personal attributes we look for include being determined, innovative, involved, trustworthy, inspirational & respectful. We very much subscribe to the mantra ‘hire the attitude, train the skill.’

This philosophy has ensured that we only recruit great and likeminded people who are excellent to work with and who want to do well, for themselves, their colleagues and their clients. It has created a culture throughout our 90+ employees that is a joy to behold. People come to work with smiles on their faces and leave with them too, and that’s something we don’t take for granted and work hard to create.

It’s not all work either, we have many company social gatherings throughout the year; from go-karting to curry nights, catered BBQs, trips to Chester Races and each year is capped off with our fantastic Christmas Parties. Our Branch Managers also enjoy breaks away to Spain, and staff enjoy our ‘away day meetings’ that combine work and play whether that be kayaking across Llanberis lake, zip lining 500ft above a slate mine or attempting to surf at Surf Snowdonia. Work hard, play hard is a cliché, but it’s certainly a culture where our staff, at all levels, are rewarded with social activities and fun events that go a long way to cementing fantastic working relationships.

The conversation then normally turns to the other burning questions on most candidates’ minds – ‘What is your training and development like? Can I progress?’ This is an important topic, particularly for the generation of recruits that we tend to see today who prioritise these elements, and that’s good news, as we prioritise them too. Our training and coaching has developed significantly over the past few years and is now best described as ‘bespoke per person’.  We don’t believe in sitting a group of people in a training room and talking to them for the day, instead we analyse in detail our employee’s performance across all elements of their role and then coach them specific to their development needs and career aspirations, working on that person’s personal development plan and this has resulted in many success stories. All our 7 Branch Managers have been promoted from within, something we always look to do and 2021 has also seen 7 employees promoted to the role of Assistant Manager and a further 7 into Valuer positions.

It’s not just about progression in terms of responsibility and hierarchy though; for many, being the best version of themselves is what some people strive for and we are here to support them too. Nothing gives us, as Directors, more satisfaction than seeing individuals use the coaching to enable them to develop skills and achieve their goals. This meritocracy is something quite unlike anywhere else I have worked.

Salary is always a significant motivating factor and, from my experience in the industry, I can proudly say that our basic salaries and commission packages are the highest I have ever experienced. Yes, the standard is high, but so too are the rewards and we pride ourselves on looking after our employees. To put some meat on the bone, Sales and Lettings Negotiators with limited or no experience, once they have completed their training and are working to ‘The Karl Tatler Way’, should be looking to earn up to £30,000 including commission, whilst top performing, experienced Negotiators are likely to earn closer to £40,000 per annum.

Individual/office success and progression is always celebrated too! We have Quarterly Awards to recognise top performers and each year is capped off with our renowned AGM and Awards event where the whole company comes together and we review what we have achieved together that year, celebrate personal achievements and present our plans, predictions and focus for the coming year.

Our company is very much in ‘growth mode’, having opened two additional high street offices and expanded our Head Office over the past two years (despite the pandemic) resulting in 40% growth in employees.
