Up to 1/3 of UK residents could be living with a potentially dangerous fault in their home according to research from leading online roofing supplier Roof Stores.
Compiling data from sources such as RIBA and Corgi HomePlan, Roof Stores discovered that 60% of Brits have some sort of fault in their property (i.e. broken radiators, blocked plumbing, damaged sockets), with 31% admitting to leaving common household issues for a week before attempting to fix them.
The most likely explanation for the delay in addressing these issues is that the hefty cost outweighs the urgency to deal with them. In fact, on average, £44bn is spent on essential home repairs across the entire UK annually.
With 1/4 of Brits agreeing that regular upkeep of a property is crucial to its market value – a well-maintained property even has the potential to increase its net worth – you’re best off ensuring that serious issues aren’t given the opportunity to arise in the first place.
So, what do you have to look out for? Sometimes even things you’ll take for granted can progress into household horrors. The most common problems that can quickly escalate into dangerous faults include:
- Faulty boilers
- Leaking pipes
- Blocked drains
- Rising damp
- Cracked of missing roof tiles
- Pest infestations
Each one of these can prove to be a huge pain (not to mention expense) for the homeowner, especially if left to develop. This being said, they’re all preventable with the help of regular checks and routine maintenance.
If you implement, and stay on top of, a seasonal home maintenance schedule, it’s possible to stop minor issues before they turn into full scale disasters.
